How to Avoid Diverticulitis
There is a saying that goes something like “Getting old is tough, but it beats the alternative.” This statement is true. It is also true that in a society that is increasingly unhealthy, getting older is tougher than it used to be. Carrying around unnecessary extra pounds results in knee problems, even in younger adults. Conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and hypertension are growing in numbers and in the younger age categories of adults.
Unhealthy diets in America are the direct cause of many health problems, particularly over the past few decades. Diverticulitis is one example. It is affecting a growing number of Americans. What is diverticulitis? It is the inflammation and irritation of small pouches on the interior of the intestinal tract. The pouches are called diverticula. Symptoms of diverticulitis include:
- Elevated body temperature

- Tenderness in the abdominal area
The exact cause of diverticulitis is not known, but some indications are that is is due to the reduced fiber diets common to many Americans. When foods are highly processed, as is common in Western food choices, the level of fiber is reduced. The fecal matter tends to be harder. It becomes more difficult to eliminate the stools from the body and more pressure is exerted on the colon. When part of the fecal matter break off and are retained in the pouches, diverticulitis is the result.
The topic is not a pleasant one, but is important for Americans. The incidence of diverticulitis in Americans over age 60 is higher than fifty percent. When you consume a diet high in processed foods, you are more likely to experience from diverticulitis.
Tips to Prevent Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis is diagnosed by your doctor. It is not particularly difficult to obtain a cure for the condition. Typically these include a temporary liquid diet, or bed rest, or antibiotics, all of which are inconvenient. However, it is less inconvenient to avoid the symptoms of the condition in the first place. There are two factors that should be incorporated into your lifestyle.
- Eliminate processed food from your diet. There are many dangerous effects on your health that come with the consumption of packaged and highly processed foods. They should have warning labels! The processed foods are easy to use for busy people. Otherwise, they have few to no positive features. Processed foods get in the way of losing weight and can create many internal health issues such as diverticulitis and diverticulitis.
- Fiber, fiber, fiber! High fiber cereal is a favorite with grandparents. They know that consuming fiber is effective in softening stools. Fiber helps to alleviate constipation. When the stools are softer, the likelihood of diverticulitis is lessened. High fiber in the foods you eat make you feel fuller longer. Healthy foods are the ones that are most likely to help you achieve your weight loss objectives. You don’t need to eat the same old-fashioned cereals that your grandmother eats. Instead, make your choices from fruits, nuts, vegetables and legumes.
