Multivitamin Supplements

Can Multivitamin Supplements Help You Lose Weight and Prevent Cancer?

I would like to share with you the results of a study conducted by researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. This study showed that certain vitamin supplements not only help prevent weight gain in certain groups of overweight people, but can also play an important role in the prevention of cancer.

Chromium, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 which are often present in high quality multivitamin supplements, can prove very useful for weight loss or control. Research also suggests that regular consumption of multivitamin supplements will help maintain overall good health and provide protection against certain types of cancer. The National Institute of Health cites a study of 30,000 participants taking supplemental doses of Beta-carotene, Vitamin E, and Selenium and showed a 13% reduction in deaths from cancer.

Multivitamins are widely known to help dieters obtain certain required nutrients. In order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. But calorie reduction may also pose a risk to your health if you aren’t getting essential nutrients from your diet. In this respect, multivitamins can ensure proper nutrition as you lose weight.

Exercise should be an integral part of any weight loss program. But heavy workouts in conjunction with a restricted diet can result in a deficiency of essential minerals and vitamins in the body. Taking multivitamin supplements can help you maintain energy levels by providing the nutrients necessary for food metabolism and can help keep disease at bay by strengthening your immune system and insuring that you don’t become nutrient deficient.

How often do you need to take a multivitamin supplement?

Some multivitamins are taken once a day and some are spread throughout the day. Make sure you choose the system that works best with your lifestyle. If you choose a multivitamin that you need to take 3 times a day, but you tend to forget and skip one or two, then you’re better off choosing the once-a-day variety. If you prefer to take your supplements as whole separate vitamins, keep in mind that some vitamins work with each other and others work against each other, so you should educate yourself on possible interactions. Vitamin D and Magnesium aid in Calcium absorption, so these should all be taken together, but Calcium hinders Iron absorption, so it’s best to take these at different times of the day. Iron is best taken with Vitamin C, as this vitamin helps your body absorb the iron better.

Some vitamins and minerals in high dosages are toxic and can lead to their own set of health problems. For instance, many multivitamins contain magnesium, zinc, iron and Vitamin A which are all needed by the body in certain amounts, but too much zinc can cause nausea and vomiting, excess magnesium can cause diarrhea, too much iron can lead to constipation, nausea, and vomiting, and high levels of Vitamin A can lead to birth defects, liver problems, and osteoporosis.  Always read the label for guidance on how often and how much of the supplement to take, and refer to the Healthy Way Diet Manual for additional information regarding the nutrient content of various foods.

Multivitamin-based weight loss formulas

Many companies offer weight loss formulas based on multivitamins. These formulas may consist of multivitamins with green tea or other herbs. However if you follow a sound dietary program, you will not necessarily require a vitamin based weight loss formula, rather it is advisable to take a high quality multivitamin instead.

Vitamin B

B vitamins including Riboflavin, Pantothenic acid, Niacin, Pyridoxine, Biotin, and Vitamin B-12 are important vitamins that aid in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It is important that your vitamin regimen include proper amounts of the B vitamins.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is another key nutrient that should be included in your multivitamin supplement. Vitamin C provides numerous health benefits. For weight loss, Vitamin C aids in carbohydrate metabolism. Studies have also shown that this antioxidant helps protect against free radical damage, aids in wound healing, and helps strengthen the immune system. The body doesn’t store Vitamin C so toxic dosage are rare, but it is recommended not to exceed 2000mg per day.
